RFID Tags Monitor Salmon and Sturgeon Populations

The Fish and Wildlife divisions of both Oregon and Washington are using low-frequency RFID to monitor salmon and sturgeon populations in their rivers.  Low-frequency HDX RFID Tags are the ideal solution as this technology works well in water.

track fish,rfid,rfid tag,scan in water,psion workabout proTo read the tags, the Fish and Wildlife divisions chose the Psion Workabout Pro3 with the RFID module.  They chose this mobile terminal for a number of reasons.

First, its IP rating is very high (IP65 – rated for sprayed water), so it meets the rigorous environmental requirements.

Second, the WAP is modular and can be retrofitted in the field if needs change – so they could exchange the RFID reader for a long-range bar code module, or add GPS to the unit.

And, since so much of today’s technology is replaced every 1-2 years, it was important to them that they chose a terminal that would be available long-term.  Psion has a policy of assuring that all replacement models are downward compatible, so if the Workabout Pro3 becomes the Workabout Pro4, the software used by Fish and Wildlife will work.

The Psion WAP3 will be monitoring all the waters in the Pacific Northwest for years to come.
